·    Flora: Hevea brasiliensis, Bertholletia excelsa, Dalbergia spruceana,  Tabebuia sp., Euterpe oleracea and Mauritia flexuosa.

·    Fauna: Mymercophaga tridactyla, Priodontes maximus, Speothos venaticus, Panthera onca, Pteronura brasiliensis, Trichechus inunguis, Sarcoramphus papa, Harpia harpyja, Guarouba guarouba, Podocnemis expansa, Podocnemis unifilis, Geochelone carbonaria, Melanosuchus niger, Arapaima gigas, Colossoma spp., Cichla ocelaris and Cichla temensis.

 

Threat Addressed

The logging industry and the agriculture of soya. Both are applying pressure to the park area, together with infrastructure investments such as roads and ports.

 

Project Purpose

In July of 2004 CI-Brazil established a partnership with Alcoa to develop an action and implementation plan for the Amazon National Park. The proposal of the project was developed entirely with the participation of the community of Itaituba city, with local institutions and the IBAMA responsible for the management of the unit. The purpose included:

·      Production of didactic material on the biodiversity of the National Parks for educators

·      Workshops of qualification in environmental education and biodiversity, and community communication

·      Organization of a GIS laboratory for the Amazon National Park

·      Infrastructure and Management Plan
